Forward-thinking retailers have worked on improving omnichannel strategies for years, but the pandemic shifted more customers than ever to digital-first engagements. Much of that behavior will likely continue post-pandemic. Brick and mortar stores aren't going away, but businesses should recognize that the first impression they make with customers will probably happen in the digital space.

Physical interactions are still necessary to obtain products, but the timing and nature of those interactions are evolving rapidly, thanks to technology. Experiences must be simple and seamless as customer expectations are higher than they were pre-COVID. They assume they can come to a traditional store, but they also want the option to buy online and have the product either shipped to their home or be available for local pickup (BOPIS).

Gone are the days when e-commerce and brick and mortar could be siloed off from each other within a business. What’s needed now are cohesive strategies where the two support each other to drive sales.

The winners going forward will be businesses that use digital and virtual to reshape the customer experience and build stronger customer connections.
